Amethyst

The Stone

The color comes from iron impurities trapped inside the crystal during formation, altered over millions of years by natural radiation deep in the earth. The same element, iron, in slightly different conditions, produces entirely different results in different stones. In amethyst, it produces a purple that ranges from pale violet to a deep, saturated royal.

This is the deep end of that range. A dense, rich purple with no washed-out areas. The color is even and full throughout each 4mm bead.

Amethyst registers 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. It's a durable stone. Today, the largest deposits are in Brazil, Uruguay, Zambia, and Madagascar. But for most of human history, amethyst came from only a handful of small, difficult sources: the Ural Mountains of Russia, Sri Lanka, and India.

That scarcity is the beginning of one of the most unusual stories in the history of gemstones.

The History

In 1652, fine amethyst was valued alongside diamond.

That is not an exaggeration. For most of recorded history, amethyst was classified alongside ruby, sapphire, emerald, and diamond as one of the five cardinal gemstones. The rarest. The most sought after. The stones reserved for royalty, clergy, and the wealthiest people alive.

There is a reason for that. Purple has been the color of power for as long as power has existed. Roman magistrates wore purple robes. Byzantine emperors signed their edicts in purple ink. Queen Elizabeth I decreed that only members of the royal family were permitted to wear the color. And the stone that produced the deepest, most vivid natural purple on earth was amethyst.

It sits in the British Crown Jewels today. An amethyst tops the Sovereign's Sceptre with Cross, directly above the Cullinan I, the largest cut diamond in the world. The Catholic Church called it the Stone of Bishops. Every bishop wore an amethyst ring as a symbol of spiritual clarity and piety. A scarab-shaped amethyst bracelet was found in the tomb of Tutankhamun, dating to roughly 1323 BC.

Ancient Greeks carved entire drinking goblets from amethyst. The name itself comes from the Greek "amethystos," meaning "not intoxicated." They believed the stone kept the mind clear and sharp. When diluted wine matched the color of amethyst, the Greeks considered it safe to drink. The stone became the measure of sobriety itself. Roman nobles did the same, drinking from amethyst-studded cups at feasts, trusting the stone to protect against overindulgence.

Then, in the early 1800s, massive deposits were discovered in Brazil. Overnight, the supply changed. The price collapsed. The stone that had been valued equal to diamond was reclassified as "semi-precious." A category it had never belonged to before.

The stone didn't change. The purple didn't change. The history didn't change. Only the supply changed. And with it, the world's perception.

The Belief

In modern practice, amethyst is associated with the crown and third eye chakras. It is said to promote clarity of thought, calm the mind, and strengthen self-discipline. Practitioners believe it helps dissolve mental fog and sharpen decision-making.

This tracks with how amethyst has been used for thousands of years. The Greeks used it for sobriety and clear-headedness. The bishops wore it for piety and spiritual focus. The Egyptians carved it into protective amulets, believing it could shield against fear and guilt. Different centuries, different languages, different purposes. But the same stone kept being chosen by people who needed to think clearly when it mattered most.

Our pieces are made with natural gemstones; slight variations in color, size, and pattern may occur.
