244 years ago, a group of gentlemen came together to sign the Declaration of Independence, which proclaimed the independence of the 13 American colonies from Great Britain.

At the time, Charles Thompson, who was the Secretary of the Continental Congress explained why the colors of Red, White and Blue were chosen for their flag.

"White signifies purity and innocence. Red, hardiness & valour, and Blue… signifies vigilance, perseverance & justice."
